Here’s the big misconception.

Everyone can build a stunning portfolio website from scratch using photography website templates.

So, does this mean you can’t do it? Not at all. But it will take some time and effort. And you’ll need one of the best WordPress themes for photographers. To help you get started this article will give you a step by step guide and a collection of beautiful photography themes.

WordPress is a wonderful platform even for beginners. You can get started today. And with a WordPress photography theme you can build a portfolio website on a low budget. If you want to go straight to the theme collection click here.

Are you already familiar with WordPress? Then this is for sure the best way to get a professional website. The features and flexibility will help you showcase your portfolio like a pro web designer. You can reach people from all around the world and maybe even sell your best photos online.

You do not need to be an expert. No coding skills required. You can choose to start out with a free theme or allow yourself to have the benefits of a premium theme. Both will offer a variety of different features and specifications. But support and ongoing updates will often be better if you use a paid theme.

Besides that, you can add more powerful features to your WordPress website with WordPress plugins.

Choosing the right portfolio WordPress theme

Maybe you are planning to improve your existing online gallery? Or maybe you’re just starting to establish your online presence? Never the less your choice for a WordPress theme always should depend on some factors.

When choosing a WordPress theme you need to consider your needs. Prepare and know what functionality and features you need. Look for the layout options and design elements available. There’s a whole range of features such as image sliders, drop and drag builders and multiple layouts etc. Your should blend a combination of the available characteristics to meet your conceptual goal. And make sure you can get help from a support team.

To help you get started we did some research. In this article, you will find the best WordPress portfolio themes. We have a section with free themes and a section with premium themes. If you want to search even further I recommend a marketplace like Envato where you will find a huge collection.

Before you decide, please take your time to browse the list. You should get familiar with the themes and features available before you decide. Good Luck!

I have searched high and low for a good photography theme where i can show the image on a html page (not pop up etc) and then have some sort of detailed description in html (for seo purposes and more) however there are only these fancy full page gallery wordpress themes which are suited to people sharing photos not professional photographers. If i have issed any themes that do as i describe, please let me know.

Maybe something where the images loads as a html page and on the left side, a thin column with a descriptin and the whole right side the image, or the image centred with a description underneath in full page.

Anything!! ive searched everything and cant find any that meets the above and looks good.

i was going to use:

if anyone could provide advice/suggestions, it’d be so appreciated, thanks!!

as it appears to be for “morons” like me – but curious about your thoughts on it. any advice or suggestions, so much appreciated, thanks!!

Web design is a bankable skill, but it is abundant added than that. Through this medium, you can reposition yourself from bell-ringer to author, creating agreeable and designing it your way. You can adorn your life; the lives of others; and accomplish your mark on the average – conceivably on your generation. All this and added is possible, if you yield your clear architecture aptitude to the Web.

The fullscreen ones really stand out I think. But they’re not really used for featuring the photos I think as well (normally in portfolio photos are displayed in ‘normal’ size.

I love the initial wow that they give but trying to decide if they’re a novelty or great…

Hey there, I downloaded one of these awesome themes to use for my photography business.
I am having an issue installing it though, the new wordpress I don’t think allows you to upload a theme and you have to pick from one of there themes correct? I would love some help. I payed for a theme and haven’t been able to use it.

patrick dinneen November 19, 2012 at 9:12 am

@Marvin- you don’t need any experience. Some templates are extremelly simple to set up, some need a bit of configuration. The more you want to tweek, the more you’ll need to play around with the code. Some Developers have great support forums where they’ll answer any questions you have. On my site, http://www.photoblog.ie I use Dandelion theme and the Developer Pexeto has answered dozens of questions I’ve had.

Most themes are extremelly cheap to buy, you can always ask the Developers questions before you buy too.

First, thank you for the honesty in your disclosure. Also, thanks for a great, super informative page.
I would be very glad, though, if you could tell me if all those templates have a mechanism that can prevent people from downloading my photos without my previous consent, so that I can sell them if anyone is interested.
Otherwise, what websites would you recommend for that?
Thanks a lot.
All the best.

annesofie October 4, 2012 at 10:55 am

Thanks for your highly relevant question. Protecting images on a web page is not easy. However there are things you can do to make it more difficult. 1) Add watermarks to prevent simple screencapture, 2) insert scripts that prevent save as actions 3) show small versions and only offer the high resolution photos in a pretected area. We will consider creating an article on this topic soon

Best regards

bo9009 October 1, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Wow, coming up with a new photo each week? That’s a tough requirement. One photo = 6 to 8 hours of work for me. Finding the subject, photographing, processing, uploading and writing a story. Although a good exercise, it might be too tough for some people to find that much time. It might significantly reduce the participation. And that would be no fun

Jenny September 9, 2012 at 9:23 am

Really Great Themes! I’ll use some of them for sure! But you forgot to introduce here the themes from the oQey team. They also have themes for photographers. Though they have a not so wide range of themes, these are of good quality and taste. A photographer or a videographer can choose from colorful themes and a white and black theme. These can be used for publishing photos and/or videos from an engagement, boudoir, wedding or other celebrations. Take a look at them, I hope you’ll introduce them into your list of photography themes.

Ajay Rana August 17, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Hi, While working with http://www.pixpa.com, you will be provided with preset design and you just have to manage your portfolio. Use it for 15 days free trial.

Justin August 8, 2012 at 7:38 am

I’m definitely a fan of the templates, but I do have a question.
From what I see of the majority of home pages are setup with photos in landscape orientation and was curious how they would look with a portrait or more vertical image?

Thanks in advance. Excellent job.

John @ Photography Web Templates July 26, 2012 at 7:28 pm

That’s a HUGE list! Lots of nice designs here. Makes you wonder why anyone would use anything other than WP. Thanks for compiling and sharing!

Michael July 9, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Sonny your websites are marvelous, however I am looking for something specific. I am looking for a WP template that is white, set up as a portfolio book, on the cover and the last page I can insert my logo, the on every page I can have an image. The pages of the book can only be turn forward or backward by the viewer with obvious tabs. I would be looking for something that I can have unlimited books for different areas of my photography. At the the top of each page would be tabs to access the other books. Do you have something like this?

patrick dinneen July 6, 2012 at 10:30 am

Thanks for sharing. I’m suprised that so few of the sites (1 I think) have e-commerce built in. When somone creates a photoblog normally after some time they think would people be interested in buying my photos.
I use fotomoto on my site (http://www.photoblog.ie) and it’s great, can set it up so buy options are added to every photo automatically. It’s limitation, imho, is that they do the order fulfillment and postage is from the USA so this increases the costs.

I have to say I love themes where the photos take up the whole screen, people really get to view the photo better then.
Pa, Galway.

Lars July 6, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Thanks for sharing your blog here and your passion for full screen photo themes. You are right that too few of them have built in shop modules. Lets hope developers will pick this up!
