Horizontal scrolling websites are more or less considered as an underground phenomenon. This way of scrolling is unexpected and may even be considered laborious to navigate by some users. It is also likely to be more difficult to construct a website with horizontal scroll compared to a vertical scrolling website. I think these reasons explain why only few new websites use horizontal scroll, but does this mean they do not have “a right to exist”?

No, they do work great in some cases. Horizontal scrolling websites are perfect for those that like to make their website an extension of their craft or brand. If it is bold, mind boggling and unusual, your viewers will expect something that is equally expressive. Horizontal scrolling websites work great with photo galleries and portfolios. However, they do not work particularly good with word heavy websites such as blogs.

Many are not launching horizontal scrolling websites because they think the design will only confuse visitors. However, people can adapt easily and they can actually be intrigued by a design that is different than what they are used to. You might even impress them. We should also remember, that mobile surfing has exploded and we are getting more and more used to the horizontal view and navigation style on touch screens.

So, here is a look at more than 20 interesting horizontal scrolling websites that will hopefully inspire you and be helpful if you want to shift to a horizontal scrolling web design.
