Over the years, web designers have used 3D effects, textures, noise, gradients and light effects to give web sites a unique and realistic touch. However, recently it has been a strong trend to cut down the visual effects as much as possible and keep the design flat.
One of the main drivers for this movement is the increased focus on mobile first web design. Minimalism is great for usability on devices small screens and with bandwidth limitations. With the release of Windows 8 and the metro design style used on Windows tablets Microsoft joined trend. The main design principle in Metro is to give more focus on the content by relying more on typography and less on graphics. A typical characteristic about Metro style is that it typically is implemented using strong colored blocks.
Designers immediately fell in love with the metro design concepts and we see a lot of website now with metro elements. It also means that we see quite a lot of modern metro website templates for platform such as WordPress. Some WordPress metro themes go all the way and allow us to build websites with layouts that are pure metro. Other themes just borrow bits and pieces from metro but this easily show.
