iPhone multiplayer games

Online multiplayer games have been a hit for a very long time and for a reason. Consider MMORPG Games like e.g. World of Warcraft having 11+ million paying subscribers and games like FarmVille played on the social media site Facebook having 46 million monthly users. These games have made it clear that people like games and that it is typically much more fun and challenging to play games with or against other people. Latest development in mobile devices like e.g. the iPhone 4 makes it possible and really fun to play games any time and anywhere. Further with several million iPhone 4’s sold by now, there’s a good chance you can find a friend or a co-op partner to play with online. Actually there are plenty iPhone multiplayer games available and they are typically sold at a very low prize in the App Store. Whether your pal is across the room from you, in another country, or even in another time zone should not matter much. There are different options available. You can play over local WiFi where all players connect over the same hub or use Global WiFi and 3G games letting you compete from anywhere. For this article I have created a list of the best iPhone multiplayer games allowing you to play with other people on the move. Enjoy! Apps and games for the iPhone are great but don’t miss out on these iPhone 4 Cases. They protect your iPhone and makes it look great! It is so popular now to create apps and games – have you ever considered learning how to make an iPhone App yourself?

1. Slice HD

Slice HD

This is a great game to play with 2 or even more people. You have to move the blades out of the way carefully with your fingers to punch the buttons underneath. As the levels get more complex you need more and more fingers and quick reactions to avoid getting ‘sliced’. The sound and splatter effects are so good that we found ourselves jerking our hands away while playing because we actually felt like we were going to get cut. Great game to gather people around.

2. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard

Shadow Vanguard is a more strategic take on the first person shooter. It emphasizes cover and teamwork much more than games like Eliminate. There is a death match as well as a cooperative mode but the lack of voice chat makes the co-op mode very difficult for a gameplay mechanic that requires precise timing and teamwork.

3. Armada: Galactic War

Armada: Galactic War

Armada has a true world-wide multi-player system! Choose your Armada and prepare for war in this revolutionary four player online 3D Real Time Strategy game. Battle to get new upgrades and become the most powerful and fearsome Armada in the galaxy!

4. Super Stickman Golf

Super Stickman Golf

This physics puzzler-meets-golf game has online multiplayer access for up to four people. Players race to the finish, instead of attempting to score by fewest strokes. This means that strategy and shot selection have changed dramatically from the more traditional single-player mode. With little time to set up the perfect aim, getting the quickest and most effective shot is key. Thankfully, a variety of power-ups help make this happen. Ultimately, sinking the ball right before an opponent offers the kind of satisfaction that makes online gaming great.

5. Call of Duty: Zombies

Call of Duty: Zombies

Four Massive Zombie Maps. One Great New Price. Now includes the ALL-NEW fan favorite, Der Riese, the largest, most feature-rich Zombie map to date. This is the ultimate Co-op experience for the iPhone/iPod Touch!

6. Bomberman Touch 2 –Volcano Party

Bomberman Touch 2 –Volcano Party

I was a huge bomberman fan and always have been. I played it for Gameboy all day! But this is nothing like the Gameboy version. It’s hard to control and doesn’t have the responsiveness. The levels are lame and just unfamiliar to me. If you like classic bomberman, this game is NOT for you.

7. Star Legends

Star Legends

This online role-playing game allows players to tackle quests with others all over the world. A player can auction items and acquire special equipment, just like the traditional MMORPG games, but now it can be played during the morning commute. The game is free, with no subscription costs, and as a bonus, is a universal app on iOS. Player accounts are cross-compatible with Android, making it possible to play as the same character on both devices.

8. Fruit Ninja HD

Fruit Ninja Fruit Ninja is a juicy action game with squishy, splatty and satisfying fruit carnage! Become the ultimate bringer of sweet, tasty destruction with every slash. Swipe up to EIGHT fingers across the screen to deliciously slash fruit like a true ninja warrior, taking in all of the crisp detailed effects which have been radically improved from the iPhone version. With two games modes in single player and worldwide leaderboards using Game Center, the addictive gameplay will keep you coming back for even higher scores.

9. Tower Madness HD

tower madness

Tower Madness is one of the best multiplayer tower defense games out there. The addition of a human opponent makes this game a ton more fun than just playing against the AI. The game has you laying out defenses against your opponent while trying to steal his sheep. Nice inventive spin on the standard TD model.

10. Foosball HD

fossball hd

Pick up and play this easy-to-learn but hard-to-master iPad game from Illusion Labs, the creators of smash-hits such as Labyrinth 2 and Touchgrind.

11. Worms 2: Armageddon

worms 2

Grab your grenades and prepare for battle, as the worms are back, bigger and better than ever in Worms™2: Armageddon! The best-selling turn-based-strategy blast-a-thon is back on the App Store for iPhone and iPad with new weapons, brand new customization options and of course, more explosions! Get ready for the ultimate installment! With many games modes available, there is something for everyone. Battle against 3 other friends in high-octane multi-player action or take on the solo campaign in a bid to become the ultimate mercenary worm!

12. Marble Mixer

marble mixer

Have a blast playing with marbles all over again in this terrific 1-4 player game for the entire family.

13. Small World

small world

Take control of insanely fun fantasy race & special power combos, such as berserk hobbits, triton merchants, alchemist ratmen and dragon-master amazons to grab all the land you can in a world that is just too small to share with your opponents! 14. NBA JAM NBA Jam

Jam with all 30 NBA teams and your favorite NBA stars! Unlock legends from the classic arcade era like Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Dr. J, Scott Skiles, Karl Malone, Detlef Schrempf, and Danny Manning – plus some secret players you can only get on iOS.

15. Street Fighter IV Volt

Street Fighter IV Volt

This modern entry of Capcom’s famous fighting game series has an elaborate, near-console quality iOS version. The Volt version enables online play, allowing for battle between two players anywhere in the world. Capcom has also shown a commitment to post-release support by adding new content and addressing technical online play issues. Those who fear that a fighting game won’t work on a touch screen as well will be pleasantly surprised to maneuver Street Fighter mobile play.

16. Catan HD

catan hd

It’s Catan for iDevices. There is little to say about Catan that hasn’t already been said but to summarize it’s a resource gathering and building game that pits you against 3 other opponents in a race to colonize a new land. A great game to play with 4 people, not as fun against the AI opponents.

17. UNO

UNO

Classic card game Uno might be forever associated with scary men showing their privates over Xbox Live cameras but, if you can disassociate the game with streaming nudity and Gamerpoints, remember it’s still a fun game about cards and shouting words really loudly.

18. Eliminate: CO-OP

eliminate coop

Team Up — anytime, anywhere — in the first online First-Person-Shooter that fits in your pocket. Eliminate is a free first person shooter for the iPhone that has proved to be extremely popular. The Co-Op version has you fighting together against waves of robot opponents. It’s sort of like the ‘horde mode’ from console games like Gears of War.

19. 2XL ATV Offroad

2xl Offroad

Aside from Real Racing 2, 2XL ATV is one of the most solid racing games on the App Store. The off-road setting is a nice change of pace from many of the road racing games available. The graphics aren’t quite as pretty here as they are in Real Racing but they’re still very respectable. Tons of tracks, a bunch of uniform and ATV customization options and online leaderboards and statistics round out a top notch multiplayer experience.

20. Order & Chaos Online

order and chaos

Finally a true real-time, full-3D MMORPG comes to the App Store: Explore a vast heroic fantasy world and join thousands of players in this massively multiplayer online experience that pushes the boundaries of epic!

21. Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus

Pegasus

Probably the best single-player FPS on this list, Black Pegasus also has a strong multiplayer component. Up to 10-player battles are possible in a bunch of different modes. The standard deathmatch and CTF modes are here but you also get the classic bomb defuse and team battles as well.

22. N.O.V.A. 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance

NOVA2

N.O.V.A. is frequently referred to as ‘Halo for iPhone’ and that comparison is pretty accurate. It’s gameplay is less realistic than Black Pegasus or Shadow Vanguard, with the same bouncy feel that Halo movement has. There’s good gameplay here though and it’s a bit more forgiving than those other games because of the speed of motion. There’s a ranking and perks system in place for incentive to keep playing.

23. Real Racing 2

real racing

Get ready for the most exhilarating handheld racing experience! Take control of 30 officially licensed cars, each with unique performance characteristics. Feel the thrill of authentic pack racing action in an incredible 16-car grid – the first on iOS!

24. HOMERUN BATTLE 3D

homerun

Homerun Battle 3D! This 2011 season, the Grand Slam continues!

25. UniWar

uniwar-520x380

Uniwar has been around on the App Store for a long time and was one of the first asynchronous strategy games available. It’s graphics are dated and the strategies involved are fairly simplistic, but as millions of Starcraft players still playing matches on the original can tell you, it’s the human component that makes it fun.

26. Starfront – Collision

starfront collision

The best real-time strategy is now at your fingertips! Starfront: Collision, the epitome of RTS gameplay with gorgeous HD graphics and a competitive 4-player multiplayer, finally hits the App Store!

27. Krazy Kart Racing

krazy cart

Start your engines – the most extensive iPhone Kart Racing game of all times is now available! Get into your kart and experience the thrill of speed on 16 varied race tracks. Compete in 5 different singleplayer modes with 10 well-known Konami characters in 3D cartoon style or challenge up to 6 of your friends in local or internet wifi multiplayer mode. Use the countless extras to activate the nitro boost, slow down your opponents with obstacles and take the lead.

28. Archetype

archtype

Instead of the freemium model of Eliminate, Archetype has you pay up front but delivers a pretty comprehensive experience. Large online battles in modes like capture-the-flag, deathmatch and more make this a must-purchase for any FPS fan.

29. Chess With Friends

chess-with-friends-520x381

Play chess with your friends and family anytime, anywhere.

30. Pocket Legends

pocket legends

Pocket Legends is a ground-breaking and unique Mobile MMORPG, or ‘massively-multiplayer online role-playing game’ where you will join millions of players from around the world. Cooperate to undertake wild adventures in creepy dungeons, frigid mountain peaks, and steamy swamps! What will your path look like in this unique fantasy epic? Assume the role of a powerful bear-like Ursan Warrior, mystical Elf Enchantress, or Avian Archer.

31. Neuroshima Hex

image

A hex-based game that has you battling it out in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. This one is good for any hardcore board game freaks or those who were fans of the physical game.

32. Flight Control HD

image

You’re an air traffic controller at an increasingly busy airport: just touch and drag aircraft to their landing zones. Sounds easy? You’ll need nerves of steel and smart strategy to keep the chaos under control! Flight Control HD has been especially redesigned for iPad, with all the iPhone content plus new ways to play, new maps and new graphics. It’s insanely addictive – easy to start, but impossible to stop, so get it now and find out what everyone is raving about!

33. Monopoly

monopoly

Jump right into a game with up to 3 other players in Play Now mode. Or take your on chances against in-game computer opponents featuring 4 levels of difficulty.

34. Mirror’s Edge

mirrors edge

Mirror’s Edge is one of EA’s early offerings for the iPad and still one of my favorite side scrolling ‘runner’ games for the platform. The multiplayer component allows you and one other person to compete head to head in arenas in modes like straight up races or more acrobatic item collection exercises. Once you get the tap-and-swipe down this is a lot of fun.

Hi,

Nice post. I’m looking for more iPhone/iPod games that are not just made for short-term fun like most games listed here. Games similar to the MMORPGs listed here (Pocket Legends, O&C Online, etc.) so I can play with a sense of progression.

Any pointers?

Good article though.

aaaaah… worms. Remember the nights I spent with my friends going crazy like pro-gamers. We used to jump like ninjas with ninja rope :) . Did you know that you can shoot several times with one rope – just press the “space” button while you are in the air.

Another fun multi-player card game that you can play on the iPhone and iPad is Egyptian Ratscrew. There is a pretty fun app that just came out called RatScrew that does a good job of capturing the feel of playing with real cards. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ratscrew/id503993587?ls=1&mt=8
