Blog designs certainly can by complex, colourful and overwhelming and many free themes for Wordpress belongs to that category. Some bloggers on the other hand prefer simple and clean layouts for their blog leaving more space for the text itself to be in focus. If you should go for a minimalistic theme is really up to you to decide but if you’re considering this post will give you the inspiration needed and may help you find the theme you are looking for.

Great collection. I’ve always been a fan of the clean look in website design and these fit that bill nicely! Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

I think the minimalist approach is definitely the way to go.
We are just about to add a blog to our survey equipment site and this has really helped to make my mind up.
Thanks

Some great themes here.
This prompted me to check the stats on some of my blogs. Guess what…
The ones with the simple clean designs have significantly longer page viewing times and a greater number of pages per visit.
So I guess KISS ‘keep it simple stupid’ is sound advice.

@Rotary, great to hear about your tests. I think quite a few user tests have documented the same results. Keeping load time below a few seconds is critical but not simple at all for design blogs. Most posts on these blogs (including tripwire magazine) have many large images and then it takes quite some time to load the entire page. It could be interesting to know if this is really a problem if just the part of the page that is visible in the browser window loads fast…. I haven’t understood how it works yet but I have noticed that images on mashable.com seams to only load if you scroll down and they become visible… May be a way to minimize the overall load time… Not sure but I think I heard somewhere that Google have started to include load time in the ranking algorithms.
