Tutorials

35 Tutorials for Mastering Photoshop Brushes

Regardless of your skill level in working with brushes you should find some tutorials here for you. Some cover the basic uses and functionality of brushes, some will teach you various ways to create your own custom brushes, and some will help you to develop your skills by using them as an integral part of a design.

Brushes

The new brush engine introduced with Photoshop 7 is probably my favorite new feature since the addition of the history palette. It provides the power to turn previously lengthy, skull-compressing chores into a matter of a few merry mouse clicks. In this tutorial, we’ll explore how a custom brush can be used to make realistic leafy foliage.

Using Patterns

In this tutorial, we will go through several ways to use patterns in Photoshop. As you work through this exercise, you will learn several useful techniques

Add textures to an image for a dramatic effect in photoshop tutorial.

Add textures to an image for a dramatic effect in photoshop tutorial with layer masks, blending modes and a texturized image….

Create Your Own Photoshop Custom Shapes

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we’re going to look at everything you need to know to create and work with custom shapes in Photoshop. There’s a lot to cover, so we’re going to break things up into two parts. In Part 1, we’ll look at how to create a shape, how to define it as a custom shape, and then how to call it up and use it whenever we need it. In Part 2, we’ll look at how to collect and save multiple shapes into custom shape sets!

Installatoion help

Not sure how to get the resources found above in this article into Photoshop? Here you should find the help you need. If not post a comment or consult the official Adope documentation.

Shapes

Place the *.csh files into:

Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop X\Presets\Custom Shapes where X is the version number for your version of Photoshop.

To load a file, go to the Styles palette, then click the small arrow in the top right corner and choose one of the layer style collections from the menu.

Patterns

To load a pattern set, go to the Patterns palette (in the fill tool, Pattern overlay style, etc.), then click the small arrow in the top right corner and choose one of the pattern collections from the menu, or choose “Load Patterns” if the set is not listed in the menu. You can also load patterns via the Preset Manager in Photoshop 6 and up.

Brushes

Place the *.abr files into:

Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop X\Presets\Brushes where X is the version number for your version of Photoshop.

Brushes created in Photoshop 7 or later will not work in earlier versions of Photoshop. Any Photoshop brushes should work in Photoshop 7 and later.

From the Brushes Palette in Photoshop, click the small arrow in the upper right corner of the palette, and choose load brushes. The brushes will be added to the current brushes.

Actions

Place the *.atn files into:

Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop X\Presets\Photoshop Actions where X is the version number for your version of Photoshop.

Thanks for the brushes and patterns. I’ve had ps for quite a while, but only recently got interested in using these tools. I want to offer you some original texture photos I took with my Canon EOS D20 camera. I have brick wall, rock facing, screen door, and other misc. stuff. Email me if you’re interested. I can send you files. My way of saying thanks.
