It almost sounds too simple and like something Google itself should have made. However they didn’t and now a small sheet created by a young man from Denmark with shortcut keys and codes goes around the world like a storm. Is has already been translated into several languages available from Simon’s Google+ posts page.

The sheet was prepared by Simon and he then invited interested people to help translate and expand the sheet with additional content. The result is amazing and already show the power of Google+ collaboration capabilities.

Let’s take a look at some of the commands you will find in the cheat sheet. If you put stars around a word, it becomes highlighted/bold and the use of underscore characters around a word would place the word in italics. If you use + or @ in front of a name, Google will + look up and see if the service can find someone with the information provided.

According to Simon Laust’s update, he is overwhelmed by the amount of feedback on the sheet, but has also taken on camping and is out of reach. Google+ is however available on mobile devices – also when you are on camping…

Google has just announced a major algorithmic change to its search engine expected to dramatically improve their search results while still unnoticeable to most users and web site ownerss. Still Google state that the change will noticeably impacts 11.8% of their queries and that they wanted their user to know what is going on.

Google just declared war against the huge content farms and anyone doing what is called “black hat SEO”.

It is seriously interesting and a bit scary for all web site owners every time Google make major changes. Usually a lot of web site owners complain about unfair degradation in ranking of their web sites when Google makes changes like this. In this case if a genuine web site is put into the wrong basked and hit by the negative ranking factors aimed at content farms it may significantly impact business results. Still Google consider it necessary to deliver high quality to their users overall which makes sense I think. Googles interest is to maintain the position as the most trusted and precise search engine on the Internet delivering value and high quality content to their users.

“We can’t make a major improvement without affecting rankings for many sites. It has to be that some sites will go up and some will go down. Google depends on the high-quality content created by wonderful websites around the world, and we do have a responsibility to encourage a healthy web ecosystem. Therefore, it is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded, and that’s exactly what this change does.”

The popularity and market share of Google’s search engine is amazing, but Google has been plagued by sneaky SEO practices aka “black hat SEO” and huge content farms for a quite some time now. Content farms are web sites containing huge amounts of low quality content articles that are useless to most people. The main goal of these sites is to attract search traffic and provide backlinks to pages typically used to promote affiliate products. In many cases the content on content farms have been copied from websites with original content and manipulated systematically using a technique called content or article spinning. Let’s hope Google found the right way to push the bad websites down with minimum impact on the good ones we all want to find.

I’m excited to see the results and I will keep an open eye on this in the near future. Please share your view on this and your experience with Google algorithmic changes like this.

Understanding basic SEO is critical to success online. If you’re serious about your online business you really need to take SEO serious. In fact SEO has become a profession for experts making a good living from optimizing other peoples websites. You may consider professional help, but really there is a lot you can do yourself. Also consider if professional plugins can be useful for you. We have reviewed two of the best tools for helping you doing on-page SEO within WordPress. You can find the links in the resource section below.

The top ranking factors in SEO is still thought to be external to your site. Links from others sites is the most important SEO factor and it is divided into multiple categories. You can find more on this in the resource section at the bottom of this article, but it is not related to WordPress and will not be covered further.

tripwire magazine traffic overview from Google Analytics.

OK lets look at what you can do yourself.

Improve your Titles

The title tag is generally considered the single most important “on page” ranking factor there is. It’s what’s shown as the “headline” in your search ranking results, and helps determine whether a viewer will click on your result or not.

General tips

Titles are one of the most important SEO factors that you can directly improve yourself. Go take a look here to learn more about the things you can optimize on the pages On-Site Related Topics. There are many good tips here on how to make the perfect title. The short version is:

Search Engine Imposed Limits
Keep titles at less than 70 characters

Optimal Format
Primary Keyword – Secondary Keyword | Brand Name
or
Brand Name | Primary Keyword and Secondary Keyword

There are two important things to keep in mind:

Search engines put more weight on the first words, so if your keywords are near the start of the page title you are more likely to rank well.

People scanning search result pages expect titles to be meaningful and they also see the early words first. If your keywords are at the start of your listing your page is more likely to get clicked on.

WordPress guidelines

By default, the title for your blog posts is “Blog title » Blog Archive » Keyword rich post title”. Comparing this to the SEO title tips we just went through, this should be the other way around.

There are several ways to get the title right.

Themes that are SEO optimized link fx. Headway, Socrates or Thesis. These are not free but worth investing in. The links provided leads to reviews published on tripwire magazine.

WordPress Plugins. Before moving tripwire magazine to the Headway theme I used HeadSpace2. I believe it is the best available and it makes it very easy.

Besides allowing you to setup rules for posts, pages, archives, front page, Headspace2 also allows you to specify a custom title for each post and use tags for as meta keywords. There’s a good getting started guide and some videos on urbangiraffe.com that will help you use some of the more advanced features in Headspace2. To change the title all you have to do is install the plugins and go to “Setting –> Headspace –> Page Setting and fill the Page Title field for following elements:

Posts / Pages: %%title%% – Blog Title

Categories: %%category%% Archives %%page%% – Blog Title

Tags: %%tag%% Archives %%page%% – Blog Title

Archives: Blog Archives %%page%% – Blog Title

You can add default description and tags, but remember to set this up for each individual page or post!

In the Headway theme you can do the same and can save yourself a plugin.

In the Thesis theme you will also find that it is easy to make the needed changes.

Description and Keywords

The description tag is what the visitor will read in the search results when deciding whether or not to click on your listing. While not necessarily a “ranking factor”, it should be unique for each page, and written as a “classified ad” of up to 160 characters to compel users to click that result. The description tag should be relevant to that specific page, which is why Google Webmaster Tools points it out when you have duplicates. Again remember that the description will be shown in the results – if it is not present google will try to grap relevant text and it may not give a click!

If you use Headspace2 the following Post Box will allow you to add a unique description to each post.

In the Headway theme it looks like this.

Thesis allows you to easily add and edit Meta Description tags within each post or page by simply adding your description to a custom field. All you have to do is add a custom field called “meta” to your post or page and insert your desired text

Permalinks

Keywords in the URL is important

One of the very first thing to change is your permalink structure. In WordPress 3.0 (and most previous versions), you’ll find this page under Settings -> Permalinks. The default permalink is ?p=<postid>. This is not good for SEO as keywords in the URL will help search engines to understand your content and it helps ranking if keywords here match the content and the title. It is really simple to change this in WordPress, however I often run into blogs who have not made this very basic SEO improvement. I recommend you use either “/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html” or simply “/%postname%.html”. Using the %postname% will result in a sanitized version of the title of the post (also called post slug). So “This Is A Great Post!” becomes this-is-a-great-post in the URI.

Many SEO articles recommend using “%category%/%postname%”. I strongly disagree with this as it locks your articles to the first category they have been assigned to (or if you use more than one category it is the category that was created first in WordPress.). I have experienced serious headaches myself when I wanted to reorganize categories on tripwire magazine. The problem is that WordPress change the permalink if you change the categories and then it is not a permalink. This is very problematic in several ways even though there are solutions to get around it (trust me you don’t want to go there!).

If you have a %category% permalink structure and want to change it I can tell you that I have used Advanced Permalinks on tripwire magazine. This plugin makes it a no brainer to migrate the structure, but It is not maintained any more, and it is probably not the best option to go for long term. However there does not seam to be any good pure permalink migration plugins that have been upgraded formally to support WordPress 3.0.

I have used Redirection on tripwire magazine for other purposes for a long time and it seams to be the best option right now to go for (it is one of my favorite plugins!). Once installed go to Tools -> Redirection -> Options and make sure URL Monitoring is set to “Modified posts”.

Now you can change the permalinks to SEO optimized permalinks without having to do anything else, or worry about the search engine

Clean the slug for non-keywords

Another thing you can do to improve your permalinks SEO performance is to remove words that are not relevant for ranking. You can install the SEO Slugs plugin (not version 3.0 but should work). This plugin will automatically remove stop words from your slugs once you save a post, so you won’t get those ugly long URL’s when you do a sentence style post title. Careful if you apply this to existing posts if you have not Redirection in place as the permalink will change! Lets take an example:

/what-you-can-do-immediately-for-higher-rankings

SEO Slugs plugin strips common words like “what”, “you” or “can” out of your post slug to make it more search engine friendly. With SEO Slugs plugin activated, the slug for our example blog post would look like this:

/immediately-higher-rankings

Image optimization

Optimizing images is becoming more and more important in SEO. The ALT attribute is a critical step that is often overlooked. This can be a lost opportunity for better rankings. In Google’s webmaster guidelines, they advise the use of alternative text for the images on your web site: Use the alt attribute to provide descriptive text. In addition, we recommend using a human-readable caption and descriptive text around the image.

Search engines have the same problem as blind users. They cannot see the images and will rank your pages better if they know the images in the page are relevant to the content.

An often overlooked part of WordPress SEO is how you handle your images. By doing stuff like writing good alt tags for images and thinking of how you name the files, you can get yourself a bit of extra traffic from the different image search engines. Next to that, you’re helping out your lesser able readers who check out your site in a screen reader, to make sense of what’s otherwise hidden to them.

You should of course be writing good titles and alt tags for each and every image, however, if you don’t have the time for that, there is a plugin that can help you. SEO Friendly Images is a WordPress optimization plugin which automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes. If your images do not have ALT and TITLE already set, SEO Friendly Images will add them according the options you set. It is not updated for WordPress 3.0 yet but it works OK (I have just tested it myself).

The default settings are good if you remember to name your image files properly. If you files is called 02837y433.jpg it does not work well for SEO purposes!

Example:
In a post titled Car Pictures there is a picture named Ferrari.jpg
Setting alt attribute to “%name %title” will produce alt=”Ferrari Car Pictures”

Get rid of duplicate content

Archives, author pages, front page

Any SEO expert will recommend that you avoid having duplicate content on several pages. There are two types of duplicate content for a website:

if your server headers are not properly configured so each page in your site is available from an http:// prefix and the http://www. prefix, which means that each page is a potential replica of the other. Solution for this was provided earlier in this article.

duplicate content “exact match segments” of words spread across (a) your own pages or (b) multiple websites. We can influence (a) easily in WordPress while (b) requires a lot more (if you create popular content others may republish it. I recommend you use copyscape to find and deal with content theft).

WordPress sites have a lot of duplicate content per default. Post content will be on the post page itself, on the front page, on archive pages, author pages etc. To get rid of duplicate content in WordPress from an SEO perspective you can instruct the search engines to only index the main post page.

The robots meta plugin can do exactly this and it is easy to use.

In the Headway theme you will have an easy way to get rid of duplicate content. You simply set up on the options pages which areas not to be indexed.

WWW prefix or not

Another good thing to configure is to make sure you either have WWW or Strip WWW as prefix. This is important for SEO be course links to your posts will all be the same and not divided into to (those with WWW and those without). Go to the Modules tab, click on the WordPress module and make your choice under Canonical.

It is also easily done with the Headway theme.

XML Sitemap

XML Sitemaps may not be the most important SEO Factor but it helps search engines find all relevant pages in a snap. With WordPress it is simple to generate a sitemap for google. All you need to do is to install Google XML Sitemaps. You can also use it for Yahoo but Google is the main search engine traffic source.

Once the sitemap has been generated you log into Google Webmaster Tools and submit it. This is how it looks when it has been downloaded by google.

Speed Tracer is a tool to help you identify and fix performance problems in your web applications. It visualizes metrics that are taken from low level instrumentation points inside of the browser and analyzes them as your application runs.

Chrome SEO is a must for all web developers. With its suite of SEO tools, you can perform all SEO tasks, including competitive analysis, keyword research, social bookmark counts, traffic, ratings and backlink checks.

10. Validity

Validity is a quick and easy way to validate a current web page. Simply validate by clicking on the Validity icon in the address bar or pressing “Ctrl+Alt+V”. You can even use your own installation of the W3C Validation Service if you wish.

11. Snippy

Snippy is a really useful extension for collecting snippets of screenshots from a range of different sites. All you do is navigate to a web page, click on the Snippy icon, select which elements from the page you want to save, and press Show Snippets to bring up a window with all the elements you’ve selected. You can combine as many snippets as you like, from as many different sites as you like.

12. jQuery Shell

jQuery Shell allows you to run JavaScript and jQuery commands in the context of the current web page. It’s a great extension for learning and experimenting with jQuery

13. WebEdit

With the WebEdit Chrome extension, you can make any web page editable (the changes you make, of course, will not be saved). Why would this extension be helpful? If you are creating a website and want to play around with elements without making any significant changes to the code, this extension can come in very handy.

14. Chrome Sniffer

Chrome Sniffer will help web developers to inspect web framework / CMS and javascript libraries running on websites while browsing. An icon will appear on the address bar indicating the detected framework.

15. Chrome Flags

Chrome Flags simply displays a flag icon in the address bar showing the physical location of the website you are viewing. Click on the flag and you’ll be presented with additional information about the site’s servers, owners and traffic. It’s perfect for establishing the trustworthiness of a site you’re unsure about.

Google announced two days ago that the Google Chrome Extensions beta is open – Great I though! I’m a great fan of Firefox and a loyal user. One of the reasons is to be honest the many great extensions that add valuable features I have become addicted to. Having said that I experience crashes with Firefox several times a week. Seams to be because I open up many windows with many tabs and then Firefox builds up to much memory (my theory….). Firefox offer a recovery feature helping me to recover my open windows but still it is annoying! So I though lets late a look at Chome and see if the extensions offered is making it worth even considering. But I didn’t get that far…

Google announced two days ago that the Google Chrome Extensions beta is open, too, with more than 300 extensions already available. Mac users, be forewarned, extensions only work for the Windows version of the Chrome browser.

According to Google’s announcement on the release:

“Today, we’re really happy to release a beta of extensions that begins to deliver on our initial vision. Extensions are as easy to create as webpages. Users can install and uninstall them quickly without restart, and extensions have a great polished look that fits in with Google Chrome’s minimalist aesthetic. When developers upload an extension it is available to users immediately, with limited restrictions and manual reviews only in a few situations.”

Exited to investigate Chomes new features and try some of them out I downloaded and installed Chome. I then went to the extensions page (https://chrome.google.com/extensions) and picked the most popular – a Gmail Checker. But the install button wasn’t activated and I got the message “Extensions are not yet supported in this version of Google Chrome. Please download the Beta Channel of Google Chrome to install extensions.”…

OK I though again. It’s just released and it’s still in BETA. I then I hit the link and got another interesting message I wouldn’t have expected from Google!… I’m 100% sure it is a very temporary problem and that Google will fix it in a few minutes.

As soon as I’m allowed to download the BETA I will try this out and let you know what I think. As usual I expect Google to deliver excellent stuff and I hope I’m not going to wait too long

If you’re in the same situation as I am – waiting – I would recommend that you take a look at this video post. It’s actually interesting to hear some of the low level design decisions Google have worked with.

JavaScript – an indispensable part for developing websites and web pages, whether that is simple pages or professional website, and whether you are senior or junior. Nowadays, JavaScript frameworks become more powerful and more specialized; they can do many things in just a few basic steps.

However, when you decide that you need a JavaScript framework it can be quite a challenge to figure out which framework to should use, which framework is best for your needs, … ? This is mainly because there are so many frameworks out there you can choose from.

In this post, I want to summarize the list of frameworks that Google assumes most popular, maybe you wonder why it’s Google? Because it’s the most popular search engine, so I think the results will be most relevant and accurate to the majority of web developers. Here’s the list of top JavaScript frameworks by Google, with the keyword: “javascript framework”.

Yes, jQuery is really a new kind of JavaScript library, you can write less but do more; maybe jQuery is the JavaScript framework that have the biggest collection of plug-ins and add-ons. Some things you should know:

I was really excited because Goggle typically deliver high quality stuff and getting access to the tools Google have used for their own state of the art on-line applications like Google Apps, Gmail etc. almost is too good to be true. I have downloaded it and taken the first look into the package. My first impression is very good and I have to admit that I’m impressed with it’s huge size and the way it is all structured. The features available really seams useful and I recommend that any web developer take a look at this new set of tools ASAP! Lets now take a look at Closure and I’ll briefly explain what I have uncovered.

Get access to the library

In order to get the newly released Google Closure Library you need to get it from their subversion repository. Google allow anonymous check out and provide a command for people using a command svn client.

svn checkout http://closure-library.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ closure-library-read-only

It is pretty simple if you know how to do it but if you never worked with subversion you need to get a client first. There are tons of guides and books on using subversion as it is one of / if not the top source control system available and then it is open source. There are also a lot of free client applications available and some are command line oriented while others provide regular application interfaces or fx. integrate directly into windows explorer. You can find a list of worth using clients here and also get the slik SVN command line client for windows I have used for this article. If you download and install Slik SVN you will find the command line tool in “C:\Program Files\SlikSvn\bin”.As svn put the files it check out in the current folder you should create an environment variable making svn.exe available anywhere.

Open svn.exe in a command line window and you’re ready to check out Closure Library. Type or copy in the command provided above.

To be honest I was VERY surprised with the size of this library being nearly 150 MB and counting nearly 9.000 files! This is massive and not something anyone can get an overview of without investing a significant amount of time. The problem with a library of this size is that it can be hard to dig out the really useful elements but at the same time it may indicate that the library Google just released is a very serious tool that may take JavaScript to the next level. 150 MB of mainly .js and some .html test and demo files is more JavaScript than could ever have imagined!

Huge but highly structured

When you open up the bag of goodies you will find that in the top folder Google put in a file called “all_tests.html”. This is a preconfigured JsUnut test lab that you can fire off to verify that everything is OK before you start using it. This is best practice for large development projects and expected that Google use this. Having it as part of the package Google provide is to me a sign of quality and maturity that makes me feel good – year really a good first sight impression!

If you want to look into the features you can benefit from using I would suggest starting in the \closure\goog\demos\ folder. In here there is a lot of very nice demo pages illustrating how the Closure features can be used. Again this is smells good and there are more than 100 demo pages making me believe we’re well covered in! Let’s look at a few examples:

The index page

Yes Closure is huge but with tools like this it quickly becomes manageable!

goog.editor.Field

Graphics

Drawing graphics using Closure is possible but I’m not sure if generating the data for the tiger is simple )

Data for the yellow pacman seams resonable simple if I managed to locate it.

ProgressBar

Get started using it

I will try Closure out over the next couple of days and plan to post about my experience working with it soon. If you want to try it out yourself you should fire up the article Google provided to give us all a smooth introduction Finding Your Way around the Closure Library. If you have already some experience with Closure please share this in a comment. Also look at the examples and copy some code from there to get started fast!
