40 Amazingly Hot Free Retro Fonts You Must Have

Fonts are very important resources for web designers and graphic artists. If you are one of them, it is necessary that you have a sizable collection of fonts, so that when the need arises, you can easily pullout a nice typography to give a distinctive style to your designs. For today, we have come up with samples of some of the hottest retro fonts out there in the web now. For the sake of illustration, we downloaded all the fonts and placed them on old paper texture to see how they look like when implemented on a design.

To say the least, these fonts are gorgeous in their own typographic flavor which is obviously reminiscent of the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and other bygone eras. Having downloaded all these fonts for presentation purposes, it thus confirmed that all of these work in actual designing environment.

By the way, these fonts are all free for personal use and some even for commercial purposes. Tips On Typefaces In Webdesign and Font Hosts

When it comes to the design of your website a big part of the look and feel is down to the appearance and overall style of your text.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have seen a beautifully designed site which could be improved ten fold by a small amount of time styling the fonts. I cannot stress enough how much difference it can make to the finished product when the typeface fits in with the rest of your website design. Let me share a few important aspects of how to use typefaces in web design.

One Very Important Rule – Font Hosts

When a user loads up a web page the fonts are loaded up from the fonts on their computer by default, as you probably know these are minimal and can vary depending on their system. If your website is using a super cool and unique font then the user’s machine will just kick in one of their default fonts making their experience less than pleasing.

The most efficient way around this is to host your fonts with a ‘Font Host’. Many people think its OK to host the font files on your own server; the problem with this, however, is that most font licenses don’t allow you to make the file available on the public domain. To work around this issue you must make use of a ‘Font Host’ which takes care of public domain licensing issues and makes sure all of your users get the intended typeface. Google has a comprehensive catalogue of web fonts that are ideal for any web designer, especially beginners.

Recommendations for Designing Typefaces

Use Sans-Serif– As a general rule of thumb stick to using sans serif fonts, serif fonts can often be very difficult to read and can even become pixelated and blurry. From my experience a sans-serif font is much more computer screen friendly than its counterpart. This is however not a topic I’m the only one considering and there is a lot of Sans-Serif vs. Serif articles you can pick to get more details.

Now compare that with this example of a site using sans serif typeface throughout:

Adapting to increase in size – Think about the type of users whom you are designing for, if your website is likely to be visited by the older generation then you will need to take into account the possibilities of your text been increased in size. Make sure your typeface not only looks great at 10 point but also at 12, 14 and 16 point etc.

Make good use of CSS properties to eliminate any potential problems when increasing the font size such as using em’s instead of pixels. Using em’s to define your font sizes ensures it scales properly with the rest of the text on the page.

Take note of symbol styling – Remember that designing your typeface doesn’t just mean making numbers and letter look great but also making sure commonly used symbols look great too. If you want to make sure all your symbols fit in with the rest of your typeface and design make the most of your html entities.

Colour Care – No, I don’t mean take care when washing your coloured clothes! How many times have you been reading a websites content, then had to stop half way through and look away because your eyes start hurting? Probably more times than you can count on both hands, right? A typical example of this, and one of my pet hates is white text on a black background, my eyes and my brain simply say “this is very wrong”!

In my experience dark fonts on lighter backgrounds cause less of a problem and receive fewer complaints than light fonts on dark backgrounds. It’s always worth doing a quick test yourself or asking a colleague to read over a page a couple of times, chances are if they are comfortable reading it the majority of your readers will be happy.

Take into account your colour wheel and most importantly make sure the text colour is drastically different to the background colour.

Here is a classic example of too much colour combination (whether the site was designed ironically can be left to the readers own discretion). There is no consistency in this site’s layout and it goes against all the standard rules of thumb listed above. Notice the vast use of colours and various fonts, different text sizes, mixture of italic and non-italic/standard type setting, the use of both light text on dark background, and dark text on light background.

Now here’s an example of how a limited use of colours and overall consistency can be easier on the eyes.

Conclusion

The typeface for your design is just as important as the rest of the design. Make sure you make use of Font Hosts if you’re using a font that isn’t included with windows or Mac OS. Pay particular attention to detail, such as what your font looks like in larger sizes and make sure the commonly used symbols such as ampersands and quotes look right with your chosen typeface using html entities where necessary.

The most important part of the typeface design process is to make sure the users are comfortable reading it; Test, tweak and get feedback from other friends and colleagues to make your users experience a pleasurable one.

As you probably know of the right font can really make a difference and support a great concept regardless if you’re designing a new logo, web template, poster etc. Generally you can never have enough fonts at your disposal and the more choices you have, the better your chance is to find the perfect one for your projects.

Always make sure to carefully review the terms and conditions included with each font whenever acquiring them from any on-line resource. Using fonts with no included terms and conditions is really setting yourself up for legal issues, as they were most likely stripped away at some point. Make sure you maintain records of where fonts were acquired and keep the original archive file with the legal terms to prove permission of use.

This site is also a huge resource with more than 12.000 free fonts online. The site has a nice ajax powerd interface that makes it nice to work with. Good large previews.

More than 10.000 free fonts available here and a good site deisgn making it easy to find what you’re looking for. There’s a to50 downloaded and a top rated.

Right Typography for Smart Phones

From user interfaces to advertisements – type is all about communication. Typefaces evoke emotions and establish hierarchy. Typefaces entice audiences, make products more impressive, and engage readers.

They are not just important in hard copy or web, but on mobile devices as well. They can bring emotion and drama to theme-based applications and games. Type can harmonize multimedia effects as it takes the smart phone experience to the next level.

Getting the right typography

The best font for any mobile device, for any application, should have these attributes:

Open counters

Adequate lowercase x height
Reasonable contrast in stroke thickness
Distinguishing character shapes
Marked difference between bold and medium weights of the same type family
Recognizable design qualities

Open counters

White space between letters like ‘e’, ’c’, ’o’, etc. helps in defining a character. It has a powerful sway on the ease of identification. Typefaces that have open large counters are easier to read- especially in hard copy. This is true for small digital screens of smart phones as well.

Adequate lowercase x height

In typography, the x height means the distance between top of the main body of the lower case letters and the baseline of the type (not counting the ascenders and descenders). X height is an important factor in readability and identification of typeface. It is important for legibility- especially when the pixels and screen size are limited. It’s recommended for lowercase x height to be between 60% and 80% of the cap height.

Reasonable contrast in stroke thickness

Typefaces that have strong contrast in stroke thickness do not work best on smart phones. There are fewer pixels on mobile screens than on computer screens and thus the contrast is not reproduced effectively.

Distinguishing character shapes

The shapes of individual letters also influence the legibility of the typeface. For instance, double storied ‘a’ is more legible than a single-storied design. The lowercase ‘g’ that is based on roman letters is more understandable than simple, gothic ‘g’.

Marked difference between bold and medium weights of the same type family

Typefaces that can be easily distinguished from others are good to use on smart phones. They help in making a hierarchy. They also establish a brand image and enhance themes, games and other multimedia applications. Typeface families that have marked differences between proportions and weights help with communication.

Recognizable design qualities

Fonts that are used exclusively for certain user interfaces or operating systems should have remarkably legible numbers, and they must be present in many proportions and weights. They are supposed to be distinctive, and they must be capable of creating a brand identity, but they shouldn’t be too idiosyncratic, else their use would be limited.

Not all theme-based or decorative typeface designs would be effective on smart phones. While there are many trade-offs when talking about small-sized communication, establishing a different look and feel is important, but basic needs of smart phone functionality are still relevant.

It has a basic, natural feel, and is soothing to look at. The combination of rough and smooth edges where brush strokes start and end create a naturalistic look and accentuate the simplicity of the piece. In addition, the angled brush strokes can make the lettering come alive, lending a feeling of flow and motion to static images. Looking at calligraphy, one can almost see the brush touching the paper in their mind

The word “calligraphy” comes from the Greek words “kallos” (beautiful) and “graphe” (to write). Before the invention of the printing press, books were hand lettered by skilled scribes who used quills and ink to write out the text on vellum or parchment paper. Today, calligraphy continues to fascinate people of all ages. In typography, a font is traditionally defined as a quantity of sorts composing a complete character set of a single size and style of a particular typeface. For example, the set of all characters for 9-point Bulmer italic is a font, and the 10-point size would be a separate font, as would the 9-point upright.

After the introduction of computer fonts based on fully scalable outlines, a broader definition evolved. Font is no longer size-specific, but still refers to a single style. Bulmer regular, Bulmer italic, Bulmer bold and Bulmer bold italic are four fonts, but one typeface. However, the term font is also often used as a synonym for typeface.
