Not that long ago, having a business meant that you had to be present in the local community and run ads in the local newspaper. Your business also had to be easily found in the phone book. It is hard to believe that even successful businesses did fine without a website and even without a Facebook page!
However, those days are lone gone. Today, running a business either online or in a physical store often requires that you have an online strategy. This does not mean that running ads in the local newspaper is dead! A lot of businesses still rely on old-school techniques, but having a website and a social network presence has become more and more important.
Though it seems rather easy to set up a Facebook Business Page or a Google+ account for that matter, it can be quite a hassle if you have not tried it before. And as hassle often equals time consumption it could become a source of irritation rather than an useful marketing tool.
This is my motivation for compiling this step-by-step guide to help you set up a Facebook Business Page in a heartbeat. Before you begin you might want to prepare the following:
- What do you want to call the Page?
- Alternative name if the URL it is already taken
- Profile photo (180 x 180)
- Cover photo (851 x 315)
- Short text describing the business

First thing first. To begin with you need to sign in to you own private account and go to this link that will lead you to the official Facebook site for creating pages. I hope you will find this guide easy to follow enjoy!
1. Choose line of business
As you can see there are some different boxes you can choose for your Facebook Business Page. Depending on if it is a physical store or an artist you represent you need to pick the box that fits your needs the best.
2. Choose a category and name
Once you have settled on the main category you are asked to narrow it down even further. In the drop down menu you will get a lot of different categories to choose from. If non of them fits even remotely you might have picked the wrong box as shown in image 1.
3. Fill in the basics
First of all you need to fill in a description of the business here – keep in mind that you can change this text whenever you want to.
Further you are asked to enter an address for your page. You might find that the name is already taken, and in that case you need to come up with an alternative. For instance if it is a magazine you could try to call it “mag” instead of “magazine” or have a dot (.) between two words. You can change this name later if you regret your choice.
4. Upload profile picture
If you already have an image you can use as the profile picture – you can upload / import it here. If you do not have an image ready yet you can just skip this step and upload it later.
5. Final step
You can add the Page to your favorites so it is always easy to find. If you are not interested in that, you can just skip this step.
And now your Facebook Business Page is up and running however, there are still a few adjustment to do.
6. Set Cover photo
Setting your cover photo is the same as decorating your shop window – obviously you want to attract attention and if possible get visitors to like your page. As of the summer 2013 the rules for cover photos are changes making it legal to promote your business in the cover photo. Read more about the changes in .
Once you have created an image you wish to use as cover photo make sure the size fits 851px x 315 px you need to upload it to Facebook.
Now your Facebook Page looks great and it is ready for you to share posts and updates. However, if you have co-workers that will be posting on this Page, as well, you need to add an extra admin role.
