Great templates ! It would get even better if evato/themeforest.net stopped robbing the authors off .The current ~50% commission they steal of designers is simply disgusting, unethical and unfair.

They do have to pay commissions as well. So part of that $ must come out somehow. You definitely can’t beat the quality of the products on the envato network. I think that they take a smaller percentage out if you sell exclusively with envato.
I am an Envato Author and I can tell you that it actually isn’t a bad deal. If you are a non-exclusive author then Envato only pays 25% which is pretty bad, but that is because Envato really has no interest in selling themes that are available elsewhere. But as long as you are an exclusive author you START at 50%, but it goes up as sales go up. For every $1,000 that you earn, you get 1% more commission. So if you make $5,000 then you start earning 55%. This increases 1% at a time until you hit 70% which is the cap. No Envato author makes more than 70%.
Envato does reward people in other ways though if sales keep increasing past the cap at 70% ($70,000). Commission stays the same but you become an Envato Elite Author and you get all sorts of perks, unlocked as you make more money. For starters you get some minor control on your prices (normally envato sets those for you), but you also get cool things like expensive marketing campaigns for your themes, and even a trip to Australia to visit Envato HQ.
Now look at it from the Authors perspective. If they create a theme and try to sell it on their site they are going to have a hard time getting anywhere near the traffic levels that Envato achieves. Not to mention Envato handles all of the hosting, site maintenance, an affiliate program and so much more that brings customers to Themeforest to buy your themes. 30% (since you keep 70%) is a small price to pay for all of that. It is nice because the author walks away with that money and doesn’t have any of these other expenses to worry about. It’s actually a pretty good deal. More time can be spent working on themes and less time spent on site maintenance and stuff.
Even 50% isn’t bad. It sounds bad, but if you think about it, the people at 50% are just starting to sell themes. If they were to try to sell them on their own they would be fighting an uphill battle to get the traffic and exposure by themselves that Envato offers them for their 50% cut. Plus as sales go up, so does your commission and you start earning more and more. It’s also cool that the commission scales are based over a lifetime. So commission will only get larger, never smaller.
In short, don’t worry about the Themeforest authors, we have a pretty sweet thing going on. Look at the App Store, how many developers complain about the 30% cut that Apple gets? None really, because it is a pretty sweet deal for them.
