Wow, this is a really extensive list! If I may, I’ll add my 2 cents as I take a slightly different approach to backing up my important files. I’ve Syncables obsessively for about a year, and it is the most accomplished sync solution I’ve used. Meanwhile, I personally do not like to host all my important documents and spreadsheets in the cloud. So, here’s my approach: by keeping all of my files and media in sync automatically between multiple computers, I securely backup all my important data without relying on an online storage service. Honestly, I can see storing the occasional non-sensitive document online, but for everything else I stick to Syncables. Hope this adds to your discussion!

I think dropbox is the one that I found very intuitive. Pretty much it’s a folder in your computer that sync with the online storage, check it out: http://db.tt/AhBv89r

Did I mention the free package offer 2 GB storage?

Reply

Sam February 1, 2011 at 9:00 pm

The majority of these services will serve their purpose for file storage. What they generally lack is a quality user interface, seamless design and easy use. I have tested them all and the clear winner by far is Dropbox. It is the most complete of the bunch and is excellent for day-to-day usage. The most unfortunate issue with the free version of Dropbox is the limitation of 2gb. For anyone interested in Dropbox I have a bonus link that can get you 16gb of free storage space. I’m sure that would be more than enough for most users. the link is http://db.tt/AhBv89r

For users who require more online storage space, dropbox has premium accounts for 50gb and 100gb for I believe $10 and $20 monthly. In my opinion the 16gb is more than enough.

Thanks for you view on this Sam

Jack February 9, 2011 at 3:50 am

I tried the drop box link from Sam and all it offered was 2GB of free storage, not 16GB. I like dropbox but my wife and I wanted to share files on line and I paid for the 50GB service ($100) but now find out that my wife can’t share the files. As soon as the files stored exceed her 2GB limit she can’t stay “synched” unless she too pays $100. This is a bit of a rip off when paying customers can’t actually share the same files. To put it another way, to share the same set of 50GB files we have to pay $200 rather than the $100.

Lars February 9, 2011 at 1:00 pm

Jack I understand your frustration. Two things you can do. 1) Start referring people. IF they sign up you get another 250mb free… adds up over time. 2) Simply share the account with your wife (same username and password.) Unless you have files your wife should not see it is a solution that saves you $100…

I personally have been using Sugarsync for a long time now and am more than happy. Not only are they cheaper than most of its competitors, they also offer by far the best product in the market today.

Also, if you use the following link to sign up for Sugarsync, you now get 5.5 GB of free online storage forever: https://www.sugarsync.com/

Sugarsync is the way to go. It has the largest free storage around and is as seamless as dropbox (maybe better). You can start with 5.5gb + an additional 250mb after doing the “tour” if you sign up through the following ref. link that I used:

How am I protected from loosing all my files if the online storage company goes out of business ? If I buy 2 years of unlimited storage, and in 1 year the company goes out of business, do I have any rights that protect my storage or am I just S.O.L.

Is there a online storage product that does not delete your files if they do not exist on your hard drive or have to have your external drive attached? The reason I want online storage is so I can comfortably delete files from my hard drive.

I’m looking for something simple to use for ONLY online document storage – just a place to save scanned copies of bills, receipts, etc. I don’t need (or want) automatic synching, backup, etc. I am willing to pay a small fee for additional storage.

Any recommendations? My primary concern, like the previous person, is that the website/company will be around for years to come, as I will not be keeping copies of these documents anywhere else.

Thanks!

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if a government-proof online storage exists? What i mean is suppose i had something that would expose or be very harmful to the interests of someone or some organisation that is very powerful – powerful enough to get it removed from regular sites, so is there a site that is kinda an undeletable un-destroyable file-vault, security doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter if someone else can read the file too, what matters is that the file should never be deleted, that it should exist for all eternity. Such a website/company must of course have their servers located in such a country where no powerful organisation or government can touch the document ever no matter what they did, and not just one server but many copies on many servers, probably servers located in hidden undetectable locations too. Bottom line is, let’s say if a video existed that exposed the most powerful person on earth who was recorded murdering someone, then if there was a site where that video could be uploaded and kept safe, then no matter what that person did, he/she would never be able to erase that file ever. Does anyone know of such a site?

Best Rgds,
K
