Textures are used very often in modern web design and often with great results. Typically they are used as backgrounds and on design elements such as featured content area, header and footer making them stand out and have a realistic and sometimes worn out look. However textures and patterns are very versatile and can be used in many different ways. In some cases they are used in a discrete way and visitors may not even notice them and in other cases they are a key element in the design.
