Since you are here reading this article you may know it already. Drupal is a CMS – Content Management System. Content managed in Drupal is called a node. A node is the smallest chunk of information in Drupal, and typically it is representing a web page like the one you are reading just now (but OK I’m using WordPress).You can create nearly any type of web site with Drupal like fx. Personal website, Company website, a Weblog etc. It all come down to the content you put in and the look and feel you decide to use. Look and feel on a Drupal site is controlled by themes and there are plenty to choose from – even free high quality ones.

Drupal large supporting community is producing lots of free Themes and modules that Drupal users should be aware of to be able to pick out just the ones they need. Unfortunately in my opinion the Drupal.org site is not that user friendly and it can be hard to browse through the many Themes maintained at the site as there are no lists with preview images of the Themes. Drupal is one of the major free CMS Players being praised for it great design/architecture and for really being a CMS system (decoupling content from presentation). On the other hand some people blame Drupal for having to few professionally designed Themes and for being difficult to get started with. I would say that this is partially true compared to Joomla and WordPress but also I thinks Drupal is certainly getting there. I know people have different favourites and that there are many diverse opinions on this subject. What is your opinion?

Free Drupal Themes

960 Robots

960 Robots is a theme created by Lullabot for its Drupal theming videos and DVDs. This theme, based on the 960 grid system, features two columns on the right side of the page, a two-column footer, calandar-page dates for posts, and real-name usernames in posts (requires profile field with the machine name “profile_real_name”). The theme also uses Twitter’s search API to display a random message based on a configurable search string as the site’s slogan (PHP5 required).

Blue Citron Theme

Blue Citron actually provides two themes, one fixed width and one fluid width. I always build themes like this so that you can use the fluid width version for the admin areas of the site.

It also changes the CSS for the Jquerymenu module a little to make the theme match (if you happen to be using that module).

Fresh Start is a professional new Drupal theme, with a graphical banner area that could be easily replaced with a custom graphic (stock images shown are included though). Custom styles for quoted text and calendar page icons for your post date give this theme a little extra personality!

Pump Up The Volume

Wanna dark theme that kicks it up a notch? Pump Up The Volume is one of the slickest Drupal themes you’ve ever seen. Black and grey set the tone, with punches of red and blue for colour. The flexible rounded corners and gradients adapt to your regions to create at least a dozen unique layouts. Also there are six collapsible, variable width preface and postscript regions. Your forms have had extra TLC, with a specially themed login block, and custom button backgrounds for different forms. If you’re looking for the sharpest, classiest look for your e-commerce Drupal store, Sharp Sales is your theme. One of TopNotchThemes’ most popular themes, it has over a dozen styled regions for your content. Crisp, clean, and corporate, the cool colours of this theme dress up Ubercart to a new level and can work for a wide variety of store styles. Subtle gradients and hover effects polish up each corner, with mouseover styles for menu items, products, and buttons.

Stockholm

All Geared Up

All Geared Up takes on some of the best elements of modern web design — rounded corners, shiny drop down menus, bright splashes of colour, and a clean, polished look. This is a very flexible theme, with a translucent drop down menu for your primary links and two different header styles that allow you to create a custom front page for your site. The preface regions are collapsible, and the sidebar expands and alternates between two block styles. Postscript regions are designed to match the site and can be used in any combination. As with all our themes, All Geared Up comes with an optional Panels layout for easier building of your site.

Legal Papers

They say the law is open to interpretation, right? Well, so is this theme. With plenty of block styles in the sidebar and above/below your content area, you can call out your highlighted content excerpts while keeping a clean white surface for your main articles.
