Light paintings, also known as light drawing or light graffiti, is a photography technique in which exposures are usually made at night or in a darkened room. This momentary approach to art and expression uses the movement of light to create incredible images and is created on the streets, in nature, and in studios by artists whose creative impulses transcend traditional media.

Light graffiti is sometimes produced as performance art, and sometimes just to capture it with photography and video, but either way it makes for some incredible viewing. Although light is considered to be rather a practical than an artistic tool, it has some properties which designers can effectively explore in their works.  In this post you will find a huge collection of very inspirational Light Paintings as images and videos and a list of the most well known artists.

The artists showcase their precious artworks online by means of simple and well designed photography web designs. Having a powerful online portfolio is of course essential if you want a large and dedicated audience. Please take your time to review our collection of photography website templates here. Some high quality WordPress themes even have build slideshow features and recently it has become quite popular to use fullscreen slideshow effects. You can see a collection of fullscreen WordPress themes on Splashmagazine.com. Now let’s move and enjoy ourselves with the beautiful light painting photography in this article.

Caution! You may loose your sleep tonight because you can’t resist spending some hours trying to make your own amazing Light Paintings.

30 Amazing Light Paintings

The images we are featuring here are from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza, the guys behind LAPP-PRO. The light art performance photography (briefly LAPP) is a one-shot, long time bulb exposure photography, performed additionally with movement of light. LAPP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera, created between opening and closing the shutter.

I watched the “how to” video but I still don’t understand how someone can move around with the lights but the person in the photo is “still”. Can you please help me or tell me where I can find a “tutorial”? Thank you in advance!

wow. very cool. I wonder how light painted videos are done. You have to fill every frame with a finished painting. How is it synchronized with a camera??

Amazing work! What type of lights do you use? and where could they be purchased? I’ve just recently started light painting and have created things to make light spheres but i really don’t know where to start to do anything else.
