In my opinion Wordpress is more than ready to be used for other purposes than plain blogging. Worpress is hands down the best for versatility. I took the time to learn how to build static sites as well, and now attach a blog to the main site as a traffic getting machine.
Every one should know that Google love blogs because of the updated content. Also, you still nedd to learn how to market and do SEO.
