In this article tripwire magazine provides one of the most comprehensive Twitter Toolboxes available. Twitter is becoming increasingly popular and I guess that the main reasons for this is the openess and simplicity of Twitters solution. A lot of Twitter Tools are available today and you can find most of them in this article with short descriptions and illustrations.

Twitter Topic Trackers

Twitscoop

Clever site that shows a constantly-updating cloud of popular terms (although not necessarily hashtags) that you can click on to get some more details. You can also grab a widget that creates a new cloud every time it is refreshed. Finally, there is trend tracking that gives you a constantly-refreshing list based on username, tag or keyword, plus a little graph on the popularity of the search term over time.

MicroPlaza looks at your Twitter network and displays all the links shared by the people you follow with associated tweets. We call these tiles.

TweetChannel

Very clean site that is similar to Tinker in that it attempts to link a user’s login with certain hashtag topics. In order to create your own channel, you must provide your Twitter login and password, which causes you to automatically start following Twitter user @tweet_channel. This is the listener account for the service. Once logged in, you can create your own hashtag-based channel and any subsequent tweets you send out with that hashtag will show up in TweetChannel, under that channel. You can then grab an RSS feed of anything from that channel (or any other channel registered in the service).

Tweetscan

Tweetscan offers a good search engine for Twitter content but the main service is related to delivery of notifications with filtered Twitter records. Benefits of using Tweet Scan:

Twitturly

Twitturly tracks the URLs flying around the Twitterverse and provides a quick, real-time view of what people are talking about on Twitter.

Each time someone tweets a URL to their followers on Twitter, Twitturly takes note of it and applies it as a vote for that URL. The more votes a URL has in the last 24 hours, the higher it ranks on Twitturly’s Top100. It’s that simple.

Whether people link directly to the final URL, use TinyURL, Snipurl (snurl), or any other URL shortening service, we always count the “votes” correctly because our spiders actually visit every single site before it gets displayed here.

To keep things fresh and the quality high, the Twitturly Top100 only shows the 100 most popular URLs over the last 24 hours. The 24 hours are constantly sliding and because of some extra smart algorithms, you always see what people are currently talking about. And yes, to prevent gaming of our site, those extra smart algorithms catch pretty much all of the spam and robots on twitter too.

Twemes

Follows Twitter.com tweets (messages) that have embedded tags that start with a # character. These are sometimes called hashtags but we like to use the term twemes.

Through the use of twemes, we can all view what people are talking about across the whole Twitter universe. In some sense, this can be thought of as an adhoc chatroom. We also pull in recent public photos from Flickr and public bookmarks from Del.icio.us.

Twemes.com is particularly useful for keeping up on the real-time activities associated with a live event such as a conference. People who attend an event can choose an obvious tag (i.e., sxsw for South by Southwest) and use this tag as #sxsw in tweets, sxsw in uploaded Flickr photos and Del.icio.us links.

tweetzi is an easy-to-use tool that provides an optimized search interface into the real-time world of Twitter. Use it to find and tease out useful information from the millions of tweets that make up the ‘Twittersphere’.

Twistori

One of the original Twitter meme waterfalls. It is based on an infographic art project by Jonathan Harris called We Feel Fine, and its mission is very straightforward: You can choose from 6 verbs that show up quite commonly on Twitter, and once chosen, you get a reverse waterfall highlighting recent, anonymous tweets containing a personal use of that verb. Very zen and relaxing, but more art that function.

Twitterfall

Basically where twitterers go after they watched Twistori for a while and wanted a tool they could use to make their own custom waterfalls. Twitterfall supports searching for keywords and hashtags, and will support additional search parameters like the minus to exclude terms.

twendz

twendz is a Twitter mining Web application that utilizes the power of Twitter Search, highlighting conversation themes and sentiment of the tweets that talk about topics you are interested in. As the conversation changes, so does twendz by evaluating up to 70 tweets at a time. When new tweets are posted, they are dynamically updated, minute by minute.

twendz is a glimpse into what’s on people’s minds and their emotional reaction. Mining Twitter conversations alerts you to brewing trends, conversation topics and points of view. twendz uses a keyword-based approach to score tweets. Meaningful words in each tweet are compared against a “dictionary” of thousands of words that are associated with positive or negative sentiment; each word receives a score that, when combined with the other scored words, allows twendz to make an educated guess at the overall tone of a tweet. After twendz scores a handful of tweets matching certain criteria, it extracts key terms, assigns a tone rating to each of those, and assembles them in a word cloud.

Monitter

Monitter gives you three fully-customizable keyword search waterfalls that are constantly updated with recent tweets. Each search, like with Tweetizen and Twitterfall, is passed directly to the search API so you can add advanced parameters to fine-tune your results. There is also support for regional tweets, although it looks like imposing a region affects every column, which may be overkill.

One of my favorite Twitter Tools! A service which aggregates all the popular links on twitter to determine which links are popular. Tweetmeme is able to categorize these links into 4 distinct categories: blogs, images, videos and audio.

Tweetmeme provides a very useful tweetmeme button that shows the number of tweets for a specific page.Here is an example (not dynamic but just a picture). The Tweetmeme button is used on all articles and article lists on tripwire magazine.

TwitThis

TwitThis is an easy way for people to send Twitter messages about your blog post or website. When visitors to your website click on the TwitThis button or link, it takes the URL of the webpage and creates a shorter URL using our own URL shortener! Then visitors can send this shortened URL and a description of the web page to all of their friends on Twitter.

Twitter Line is an extention for Firefox that displays your Twitter time line on the toolbar as like as a head line (or ticker).

TwitKit

TwitKit is a Twitter sidebar for Firefox. TwitKit has a 6-section interface, using tabs to separate content. You can view the Twitter public timeline, your user timeline, a list of your friends and their latest tweets, a list of your followers and their latest tweets, @replies made to you, and stats about your account.

Many different color schemes and settings are available for configuration, to suit any preference of appearance.

Tweetbar

TwitterBar allows you to post to Twitter from Firefox’s address bar. A small Twitter icon sits to the right of your address bar; clicking on it will post your tweet, and you can hover your mouse over it to see how many characters you have left.

You can also post by typing “–post” at the end of your tweet. Clicking the Twitter icon when visiting a webpage will send a tweet containing the URL of the webpage you are currently viewing.

TwitterFox is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends’ tweets on Twitter.

This extension adds a tiny icon on the status bar which notifies you when your friends update their tweets. Also it has a small text input field to update your tweets.

If you’re looking for a quick way to update your status across multiple sites (Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, Facebook, MySpace and Bebo) then the Hellotxt dashboard is for you. A couple of keystrokes and every social networking “friend” you have will know what you’re up to. In addition to the Web dashboard, there are mobile and Facebook app versions of Hellotxt.

This tool lets you track the links that you tweet on Twitter. To do so, you register with the site and input the URL(s) you want tracked. It shortens them into what are called twurls (smaller URLs). A pop up appears into which you type your tweet using the URL provided and send. You then access this site for analytics information.

Twitter Mail

With this tool, you can send your Twitter updates on a Twitter Mail e-mail address and the message will be posted to Twitter.
